General Resources and Tools for the Researcher

  • Medline Workbench - Search Evaluated Medline, PubMed or AbstractsFinder all from the same page. You can also sign up to receive a free daily update of your PubMed queries via e-mail and get access to a number of free online journals.

  • NIH Office of Extramural Research - Stats and information about NIH grants, as well as a searchable database (CRISP) of federally supported research projects.

  • WebElements Periodic Table - An interactive periodic table. Includes a short background and description, along with uses, electronic properties, physical properties, and crystal structures for each element. There are even nerdy science cartoons and a few short movies

General Life Science Resources

  • Art's Biotech Resources - An outstanding metalist of molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics and bioinformatics sites. Includes links to protocols, tutorials, software and databases.

  • The Bio Sciences Virtual Library - A metalist of resources categorized by life science field.

  • biocompare - "The buyer's guide for the life scientist." Has product reviews (including Ambion products) and facilitates comparisons of kits and reagents from several different companies.

  • Biology Links - An extensive list of links to biochemistry, molecular biology and immunology resources from the Harvard University Dept of Molecular and Cellular Biology.

  • Cell & Molecular Biology Online - An annotated metalist of resources for molecular and cellular biologists. Includes links to protocols, codon usage and periodic tables, and education resources.

  • DNA Learning Center - An excellent educational resource, geared toward students and nonscientists, for information about genes. Check out DNA From the Beginning, an animated primer on the basics of DNA, genes and heredity.

  • GenomeBiology.com - An online journal focusing on genomics and "biology for the post-genomics era."

  • Indiana University Bio Archive - A collection of software (free!) and data for molecular biology and related areas.

  • Linscott's Directory - A resource of more than 100,000 different reagents used in Biomedical Research, from more than 400 different suppliers and distributors.

  • National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) - A national resource for molecular biology information from the National Library of Medicine and NIH. This is the home of the popular Entrez databases. You can search PubMed, submit your sequence to GenBank, perform BLAST searches and get genome information on a number of different organisms.

  • Primer 3 - An interactive, forms-based tool for designing primers from an input DNA sequence.

  • PrimerBank - A public resource for PCR primers. These primers are designed for gene expression detection or quantification (real-time PCR). PrimerBank contains about 180,000 primers covering most known human and mouse genes.

  • The Southwest Biotechnology and Informatics Center (SWBIC) - A dizzying number of links to research tools and databases related to the life sciences.

Nucleic Acid and Protein Sequence and Structure Databases

  • Baylor College of Medicine Search Launcher - Search multiple databases with a single input nucleic acid or protein sequence. You can also get secondary structure predictions based on sequences.

  • Biology Workbench - A comprehensive and user-friendly suite of online protein and nucleic acid bioinformatics software. Using these tools, you can search popular nucleic acid and protein sequence databases and then analyze the data with a variety of analysis and modeling tools.

  • Molecules R Us Utility - A searchable PDB database of protein and nucleic acid structures.

  • Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms for Biomedical Research - A public database of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the human genome.

Molecular Biology Protocol Collections and Techniques Forums

  • Molecular Biology Protocols - A collection of basic protocols on the most popular molecular biology techniques. From the Northwest Fisheries Science Center.

  • Molecular Biology Techniques Forum - A forum for reader-submitted techniques, tips and questions concerning molecular biology. Run by the Northwest Fisheries Science Center.

  • MolecularStation - Information on molecular biology, including methods and protocols, bioinformatics, and the latest science news. Also a forum for discussion of molecular research techniques.

  • PCR and Multiplex PCR: Guide and Troubleshooting - A very informative guide to PCR, including discussions of parameters influencing PCR, troubleshooting advice and PCR applications. Also includes links to a discussion of FISH (fluorescent in situ hybridization) and CCK (color changing karyotyping).

  • The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Jump Station - Bills itself as "the ultimate Web page for information and links on all aspects of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)," which is actually a pretty good description of its offerings.

  • Protocol Online - A collection of user-written protocols in many research areas, including molecular biology. Includes a techniques forum, e-mail broadcast of queries, and free automated PubMed searches with e-mail notification.

  • Protocols for Recombinant DNA Isolation, Cloning and Sequencing - An extensive protocol collection of common methods (mostly DNA related) used in molecular biology laboratories. The appendix contains useful information tidbits, such as units and formulas, DNA mobility in gels and consensus sequences in nucleic acids. From Bruce Roe's lab at the University of Oklahoma.

RNA Related Resources

  • Biomolecules Lecture on RNA Structure - This "lecture" from Jim Nolan includes an overview of RNA structure and useful tables on RNases and chemicals used to probe RNA structure.

  • The Comparative RNA Web Site - A compilation of information on comparative structure models, nucleotide frequency and conservation, and secondary structure diagrams for a wide variety of RNAs. From the Gutell lab at the University of Texas. Requires registration (free, but multi-step).

  • Microarray FAQ - A basic introduction to microarrays, including what they are, how they are made, and why they are useful.

  • RNA - The official journal of the RNA Society.

  • RNA Analysis Tools - A list of tools to predict RNA secondary structure, as well as distances, specific heat and energy of RNA secondary structures.

  • The RNA Society - A FASEB organization. Get information about the RNA Society annual meeting and upcoming events.

  • RNA WebRing - Provides links to academic labs and companies that have an interest in virtually any aspect of RNA research, including transcription, processing, export, stability and editing.

  • The RNA World at IMB-Jena - An impressive metalist of RNA related topics on the Web. Includes links to structure and sequence databases, protocols, software and tutorials.

  • Stanford Microarray Database - A database of normalized gene expression data from microarray experiments.

  • TRANSFAC (The Transcription Factor Database) - Information on transcription factors, such as classifications, recognition sequences, amino acid sequences and references. You can search for transcription factor recognition sites in your DNA sequences.
