ß-actin mRNA is an abundantly expressed "housekeeping" gene; therefore, it is difficult to multiplex primers for ß-actin mRNA in the same PCR reaction with primers for rare messages. Typically the ß-actin mRNA signal will overwhelm the relative RT-PCR reaction and the rare gene-specific product goes undetected. The QuantumRNA™ ß-actin Internal Standards with Competimer™ technology solves this problem. Competimers are specially modified primers of the same sequence as the normal ß-actin primers that cannot be extended. By adjusting the ratio of ß-actin Competimers to normal ß-actin mRNA primers, the signal for ß-actin mRNA can be attenuated to the level of very rare messages.
